Rising Africa: technology and innovation from the continent

There are a lot of innovation and technology coming out of Africa, particularly with cloud and fintech.  Digital concepts ranging from HR solutions, sales force services, mobile payment, software for universities and cyber security are but a few areas where technology excels in Africa and is being exported to other continents.

Innovative learning in higher education – Fred Swaniker

Fred Swaniker is the founder of African Leadership Group, an ecosystem of four institutions that collectively aim to identify, develop, and connect leaders for Africa at the entry, mid-career, and senior level. One of these is African Leadership University (ALU), a network of world-class tertiary institutions that will develop the future leaders of Africa. Over the next 20-25 years, ALU plans to build 25 campuses across Africa that will educate 3 million leaders. In September 2015, African Leadership College (ALC) (the Mauritius university is registered under the name of ALC) was granted registration as a postsecondary educational institution in Mauritius by the Tertiary Education Commission. Impact investment & investment in agribusiness

Tom Adlam is the Managing Partner of Pearl Capital Partners, an equity investment firm focusing on making investments in small and medium-sized enterprises operating in the East African agriculture value chain. Tom has lived and worked in Eastern & Southern Africa for the past 19 years. His former roles include setting up and serving as managing director of African Agricultural Capital from 2005, leading the development of the business through two investment funds. Prior to that, Tom held the position of Chief Financial Officer of CDC Group PLC’s African agro-industries investment portfolio, based in Zimbabwe. In the past Tom has also held a senior consulting role with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Kenya. He is a chartered accountant and a fellow of both the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants. He also holds an MA from Oxford University and an MBA from Manchester Business School. (more…)
